Teacher Education Initiatives
CITAL/Title II University-District Subgrants

In September 2000, the U.S. Department of Education awarded $3.4 million to Louisiana through the Title II Teacher Quality Enhancement State Grants Program to support increased academic performance of PK-16+ students by improving the recruitment, preparation, and retention of PK-12 teachers. The Board of Regents allocated funds established for the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITAL) as a match for the federal funds, and individual campuses provided additional matching funds. All nineteen public and private institutions with teacher preparation programs were required to submit proposals that addressed grant priorities in order to receive federal, state, and university funds to support the redesign of teacher preparation programs at their institutions.
